  • Brazil Trip: The Hat Party
We sailed to Brazil on Oceania's ship Regetta. People were allowed to smoke in only two areas on the ship. (No smoking in rooms or balconys). Therefore the smokers gathered together each night and made their own fun. Soon, non-smokers and many of the off duty crew were joining the always partying smokers group. These were the few people on the ship who weren't to full of themselves and knew how to have a good time.

For the hat party, everyone was required to wear a hat. The small area in the bar reserved for smokers (and the only people who ever came to that bar) was decorated in TP and blown up surgical gloves donated by the ship's docter.

  • Brazil Trip: Meeting of the Waters
The Rio Negro and the Rio Solimoes Rivers join outside Manaus, Brazil creating a natural phenomenon as the blue Rio Negro travels at a cooler 72 degree temperature next to the 82 degree muddy Rio Solimoes river. Due to both the velocity and temperature, the two rivers meet but do not mix.

  • Brazil Trip: Boca Da Valeria
The people of Boca Da Valeria are called Caboclos, descendents of portuguese settlers who intermarried with the local indians. They live completely off the land by fishing, keeping pigs and raising chickens. When the river is low the inhabitants may plant manioc and vegetables on a small patch of land. When cruise ships are scheduled, inhabitants of neighboring islands all gather on Boca Da Valeria with their children. The children are encouraged to ask for American Dollars. "One Dollar" may be the only English words they every speak. As they collect their dollars, they turn them into adult inhabitants and are rewarded with sodas. We suggest Americans take color crayons, color books or other items which may actually used and enjoyed by the children.
